Overview
The Chinese Bridge Summer Camp is an elite two-week intensive Mandarin language and Chinese culture training program for high school students. The camp is organized by the Hanban (Office of Chinese Language Council International), a government office of the People's Republic of China that promotes the teaching of Chinese language and culture worldwide. During the 2-week program students will have the opportunity to develop their language skills by attending a variety of classes, interacting with Chinese students, and participating in field trips and sightseeing activities.
Program Dates, General Itinerary and Costs
The program will take place from July 15 - July 31. Participants are asked to depart the US on July 14 (arriving in Beijing on July 15). From July 15 - July 18/19 campers will attend an opening ceremony in Beijing and participate in cultural activities, such as visiting the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube. In Beijing students and teachers will stay in dormitories at the Beijing Foreign Language School (19 Xisanqi Street, Haidian District, Beijing). On July 19/20 students will be divided into 4 large groups and will travel to the provinces for language and cultural training. This year's provinces include: Jilin, Shandong, Henan and Yunnan (high school students from southern CA have been assigned to Yunnan province). Download group assignment sheet. On July 31, students will return to Beijing where they will depart for the US.
Students and teachers are responsible for securing round-trip international airfare, a China tourist visa, and international travel insurance. Hanban will cover other program costs including housing, food, instructional costs, and domestic travel within China. Teachers must bring at least 9 students for these expenses to be covered.
Application Guidelines
This program is open to high school groups only. Each school group must have an accompanying teacher who will escort the group to and from China, and who will remain with them throughout the duration of the program. Applications by individual students can not be accommodated.
The program is designed for serious students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in China. To apply for the program, teachers should have their students complete an online application form and submit the requested supplemental materials (a passport-sized photo, one recommendation letter) by March 18, 2009. Hanban will make final decisions on student applications by April 15, 2009. Please view the application guidelines for students and the application guidelines for teachers.
Language Curriculum
The curriculum is designed for beginning Mandarin language students who have no prior travel experience to China. Students with more advanced language skills may apply, but priority will be given to students at the beginning levels.Student and Teacher Quotes
