English Language Training

UCLA is a recognized leader in the field of English language instruction for nonnative speakers. Whether the goal is improving English conversation skills, preparing for the TOEFL examination, becoming certified to teach English as a Second or Foreign Language, or conducting doctoral research in the field of English language teaching and learning, UCLA has the appropriate program. Working in one of the most international cities in the world, students studying English at UCLA have many opportunities to improve their language skills, not only in the classroom but also by exploring the diverse neighborhoods and beachside communities of the city of Los Angeles.

UCLA Extension's American Language Center offers both short and long-term English language programs throughout the year for students of all language abilities and goals.

UCLA's Center for World Languages offers a challenging palette of academic-year and summer course offerings designed for students who are interested in preparing for academic study or professional careers.

The Department of Applied Linguistics offers a selection of degree programs, including a master's degree in Applied Linguistics and TESL, a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, and minors for current UCLA undergraduate students in Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language (TESFL) and in Language, Interaction, and Culture (miLIC).

Evans Community Adult School offers ESL programs through their Intensive English program. In addition, TESOL preparation is offered.
