Learning a second language is a critical component of education today yet very few American students do it. In an increasingly globalized world, only 31% of American elementary schools report teaching a foreign language. By contrast, in China there are 200 million students of English, a compulsory subject in all schools. Even older students in the United States are not studying foreign languages with the necessary enthusiasm. When they do, it has a tendency to be Spanish or French and not other important international languages like Chinese, Arabic, Farsi, or Korean.

The United States government, itself, has stated the importance of studying languages like Chinese with its 873 million native speakers. The government is offering rich incentives to teachers and students to undertake the study of critical languages.
