Located in a region that is home to the largest Chinese-speaking community in the United States, there are many opportunities to study and speak Mandarin language in Los Angeles and at UCLA.   The UCLA Confucius Institute is working with a wide array of local and international partners to expand the opportunities for students of all ages to study Chinese language on our campus, in our community, and abroad.

Hanban Chinese Bridge Summer Camp


The Chinese Bridge Summer Camp is a two-week intensive Mandarin language and Chinese culture training program for high school students. The camp is organized by the Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing, a non-profit organization that promotes that teach about Chinese language and culture worldwide. During the 2-week program students will have the opportunity to develop their language skills by attending a variety of classes, interacting with Chinese students, and participating in field trips and sightseeing activities.

UCLA-Fudan Workshop in Scholarly Translation


This program is designed to teach the general principles of translation, understood not as a theory, but as a practical way of coping with the choices a translator will make. The workshop is open to students and professionals working in any scholarly discipline with an advanced reading knowledge of Chinese and English. The goal is to teach participants to render scholarly texts in their fields from Chinese into English or English into Chinese. Participants will translate texts of their own choosing relevant to their research interests.
