Chinese Language and Culture Resources at UCLA

Asia Institute: A consortium of UCLA's Asia-focused research centers and programs that promotes Asian Studies at UCLA and fosters greater understanding of Asia through a wide variety of outreach activities including teacher training, curriculum development, public symposia, film series, and exhibitions.

Asia Media: Created in 1998, AsiaMedia is a daily publication that gives readers news and opinions about Asian media topics.

Asian American Studies Center: Since its founding in 1969, the Center has played a critical role in developing Southern California’s infrastructure of social service agencies, civil rights organizations, museums, historical societies, media and cultural groups, and business associations that serve and represent the Asian American and Pacific Islander population.

Asian American Studies Department: The Asian American Studies Center began offering classes in 1969. In 1976, Asian-American Studies became an interdepartmental degree program (IDP) in the UCLA College of Letters and Science, offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. The Center is recognized as the preeminent multidisciplinary research institute focusing on the Asian-American population.

Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC): ALC is dedicated to the study of the civilizations of the Asian region, in all their diversity. The rich cultural heritages of the region are covered in courses ranging from language, to literature, religion, thought, archaeology, and other aspects of culture.

Center for Buddhist Studies: Jointly founded by the Humanities and International Institute divisions of the UCLA College of Letters and Science in 2000, the Center's mission is to educate American academe and the broader Buddhist community about Buddhist religion and culture in all its diversity.

Center for Chinese Studies: Founded in 1986, the Center has achieved international distinction for outstanding research on contemporary, modern and classical Chinese studies. It includes over 20 faculty members in disciplines such as anthropology, archaeology, art history, Buddhist studies, education, ethnomusicology, geography, history, law, linguistics, literary studies, medicine, political science, sociology, and theater.

Center for East West Medicine (CEWM): The CEWM is part of the Collaborative Centers for Integrative Medicine (CCIM), a campus-wide, interdepartmental effort dedicated to the practice, teaching, and science of complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine.

Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) seeks to improve U.S. industrial competitiveness through international cooperation. It offers a one-month summer course of Chinese Language and Culture for Business in Shanghai. The course teaches students about current economic issues and helps them overcome cultural barriers.

Center for World Languages conducts research that increases understanding of language acquisition, teaching, and assessment; it designs, manages, and evaluates language programs; and it builds partnerships that extend expertise to academic institutions, government agencies, and private organizations.

Confucius Institute Online Library is a large online collection of materials related to Chinese language learning and Chinese culture donated by the Office of Chinese Language Council International. The library is housed on the UCLA campus and will be open to both campus and community users.

UCLA International Education Office: An office introducing students and scholars to the various educational opportunities available at UCLA and abroad.

UCLA Extension offers Chinese classes to the community at the elementary and intermediate levels. UCLA Extension also offers a certificate program in Chinese/English Interpretation and Translation.

National Heritage Language Resource Center is committed to developing effective pedagogical approaches to teaching heritage language learners by creating a research base and by pursuing curriculum design, materials development, and teacher education.

Richard C. Rudolph East Asian Library was established in 1948 to support teaching and research programs in East Asian Studies at UCLA.  The major collections include Chinese, Korean and Japanese language materials.

Student Organizations

Association of Chinese Americans: A student group involved in cultural, social, community, and political projects that raise awareness about Chinese American biculturality.

China Care Bruins is a group that aims to provide care to Chinese orphans.

China Forum is a graduate student group that discusses Chinese issues and builds a community of Chinese scholars.

Chinese Cultural Dance Club: An undergraduate student group that promotes Chinese culture through dance. They have annual performances at Royce Hall.

Chinese Folk Dance Troupe promotes international cultural exchange through the performance of various folk dances. 

Chinese Music Ensemble promotes the performance of traditional Chinese music and culture.

Chinese Students and Scholars Association is an officially registered student organization of UCLA with over 2,100 members who are mainly UCLA students, scholars, faculty and staff originally from China that has been an active and influential force in sponsoring and organizing activities on the UCLA campus and in the Chinese community of Southern California.

Chinese Students Association (CSA) raises awareness of Chinese culture at UCLA through cultural events and activities.

Greater China Business Association (GCBA) is a student-run organization at UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management that facilitates professional networking and education among UCLA students, business professionals and entrepreneurs from Asia.

Taiwanese American Union (TAU) promotes the understanding of Taiwanese history, politics, economics, society, and culture.

Taiwanese Student Association: A Taiwanese student group that provides social support for students by organizing travel, sports, and activities.

Alumni Organizations

UCLA Alumni Association organizes travel tours to China for UCLA alumni. Upcoming trips in 2008 include: China and Tibet in May (May 6 - 25); and the Yangtze River tour in October (Oct. 19 - Nov. 3)

UCLA Asian Pacific Alumni
(APA - UCLA) was founded in 1987 to provide a vehicle through which Asian and Pacific Islander alumni can stay involved with their alma mater and show support by giving something back to UCLA. Key events include: Asian Alumni Networking Night, Lunar New Year/Scholarship Reception, East West Players Theater Night, Networking Mixers, and a Career Networking Conference. APA - UCLA provides scholarships to UCLA Asian Pacific undergraduate students.
